Success Story

The health situation in interior villages of Pothia Block in Kishanganj is really alarming The health situation in interior villages of Pothia Block in Kishanganj is really alarming as there is no access to health facilities. Patients are forced to go to Islampur in West Bengal for even minor ailments. Life was difficult for pregnant women and those suffering from reproductive tract infections/sexually transmitted diseases due to absence of any antenatal checkups leading to complications.

AIF runs 3 Mother & Child centres in remote villages where regular lady doctor visits are organized. In each camp the doctor sees more than 50 patients majority being women. Antenatal and postnatal checkup are done. High risk patients are identified and referred to Kishanganj or Islampur. These also work as counseling centres to identify HIV+ patients as Kishanganj has a large migrant population.

The regular visits from the doctors help in identifying several women who need immediate attention. They are given treatment and referred to the District Hospital. The regular antenatal checkups also help in improving MMR in the intervention area
