Success Story

Women from this region are generally illiterate, poor, and have no place to express their views in a male dominated society. Women from this region are generally illiterate, poor, and have no place to express their views in a male dominated society. They are scared to approach the government to avail of their rights. Widows could not get pension in spite of trying for 2 years; the handicapped could not avail the facilities extended to them in spite of trying for it

Spurthi realized there was a need to provide women awareness of legal/educational rights. We organized training camps for these deprived and ill treated women. The program has made women with similar attitude to form community based response group to fight agaist vilence against women.

After the Awareness Camp, on 29-07-10, Spurthi staff assembled the participants to get the feedback. Along with the participants, some local women attended the actual feedback session. It was wonderful experience for Spurthi to note the radical change in the attitude of the participants. A participant, Jayashree Kamble, explained her role in solving the case of her neighbor Shobha who was a silent sufferer of domestic violence. All other participants appreciated Jayashree and said in one tone that she will be their role model in future in solving community problems. Mrs. Bibi Batul, Counsellor of Spurthi wanted the participants to form a strong group (Community Based Response Group) to fight violence against women. She has assigned the job to Jayashree. At this point, Spurthi is planning to have 2 more follow up sessions with the participants to strengthen their mental attitude on the subject.
