There are many disabled children who are hidden inside their home in the community and are not going to any school. Most of them are either mentally challenged or multiple disabled. Apnalaya has started one Day Care Center in the community for these children. The NGO is expecting all these children to come to the center. Then they are admitted to either special school or ordinary school. The medicine requirement for a child is supported by Apnalaya. The parents show the bill and collect medicines from the pharmacist. Apnalaya pays the pharmacist by cheque for the medicines given free of cost to these beneficiaries.

The Statistics • The center is open from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm from Monday to Saturday. • Two teachers and one helper are appointed to work with these children. • 10 to 12 children are coming on regular basis.

A new beginning for Takrim
Takrim was referred to Apnalaya by one of the members of the self-help groups. Since Takrim was the only son in the family, his father was reluctant to send him to the day care. His parents were not able to accept that their child is suffering from mental illness. They thought that he could get cured if he gets treated in a private medical place. They thought that Takrim would be mocked in public and so they did not take him anywhere outside the house. Takrim was being fed by his mother and did not go to the toilet on his own. He never even realized when he wanted to go to the toilet since he was not trained.
We had been visiting his family for a period of 6 months and were kept informed about the updates on disability and its types. His family was made aware of the fact that their son needs to be trained, through the parents of children who used to come to the day care. His mother got ready to take her child to day care; however his father was still reluctant. They heard that children who had been attending the day care were able to go to a special school nearby. This made the parents change their mind and they started to bring Takrim daily to day care.
Takrim comes to the day care daily and a lot of change has been noticed. He eats on his own. If he feels like going to the toilet, he tells the care giver. He wears his own clothes and can speak multiple words. He has developed his social skills and gets around with his friends in day care. He has been able to get admission into Sulbha School for the mentally impaired. His parents are happy and are able to support the disability program as well
