Success Story

Kumar was sold when he was six years old

Kumar was born in Kudavasal village in Thanjavur. His widowed mother, an agricultural labourer, died when he was 6, leaving him to the mercy of his uncle and aunt. Mr.Ramasamy (Name changed) an ex-convict and friend of Kumar’s uncle virtually purchased Kumar for a sum of Rs.2000/ and brought him to Arangur. He was beaten and starved and trained to beg.

Kumar was identified by Miss.Sivakami New Life’s Child development Project coordinator. After undergoing psychological counseling and motivational programmes he was admitted to the special school run for child labourers. The children attend classes, are given food and the parents counseled on the evils of child labour.
The anti-socials who were hitherto exploiting the children were referred to district administration and legal action taken against them. So far 126 children are admitted to the child labourers special schools of which 75 children are admitted to regular schools as on date of this report.
