Success Story

Kaja Pettai is a slum in Trichy district Kaja Pettai is a slum in Trichy district, where children run around the slums during the day time; women wash the clothes and dishes in front of their houses. The average family size is 7. Most of the youth are school drop outs. The adults in the community are less caring about their children.

New Life started a children home in this slum. Children were admitted to the home. Women were taught personal and environmental hygiene, family planning, child care, evils of sexual infections and drug addiction. They were educated on their legal rights. The youth were motivated to continue their education or learn an income generating skill

In three years the slum has changed to a considerable extent. 49 children were admitted to the early learning centers of which 24 have moved to primary school. 10 drop outs were re-admitted to schools, 2 youth have been given vocational training and 126 women have been trained so far.
