Success Story

At the age of 13, Poonam had to drop out of school as her mother expired, leaving her with four younger siblings to look after.

At the age of 13, Poonam had to drop out of school as her mother expired, leaving her with four younger siblings to look after. She was very good at studies. She always felt that she would never be able to work and earn on her own, but having to look after the needs of such a large family at such a young age had taught her the value of money.

CSI?s ?Saksham? program and 6 months training in cutting and tailoring have made Poonam feel confident. She now stitches salwar suits, blouses, petticoats, etc. for her neighbours and earns Rs 600-700 a month. For her, even this is very valuable as she can now buy an occasional ice cream for her brothers and sisters, or pamper herself with dainty bangles and earrings sold by the local vendor.
Poonam hopes to gradually expand her work and keep some lengths of cloth and cut pieces at home so that her customers may buy the cloth and get it stitched from her only in the future. She looks forward to the day when she shall be able to open a small boutique of her own.
