Success Story

In a survey in Ambalathadi village near Madurai, we realized disabled people were neglected.

In a survey in Ambalathadi village near Madurai, we realized disabled people were neglected. The total village was not aware of the facilities the disabled can avail to lead normal lives. The families of the disabled were depressed; parents felt ashamed of disclosing the disabilities of their children

Several meetings were arranged to organize the disabled. They were educated about the benefits in organizing as a group. They were formally formed as a rural disabled self help group named “Ambalathadi oonamuttror maru vazhvu kuzhu”. They were given training on personality development, various aspects of accounting and bank linkages. They were given guidance in vocational training
The group is functioning successfully. They have started savings in the bank. Chinnapandi is training in soap preparation; Mahalakshmi in Tally, another member in tailoring. They received subsidised financial assistance from District Rural Development Agency of Government of Tamilnadu. There is a massive change in the life style of the disabled in this remote village. They are recognized by their family members and others in the society
