Annai Charitable and Educational Trust runs a matriculation school for children from surrounding villages. It is named St. Joseph Matriculation School and it is located in Venthanpatti village of Ponnamaravathi Taluk, Pudukottai District. Parents of some of the children attending the school are often unable to afford their child’s education. In such cases, the Trust provides education for free.

How It Works

• The school has classes from Kindergarten to 10th grade.
• The school admits students from the surrounding villages and the neighboring district of Sivagangai.
• Many of these children come from very poor economic background.
• Some children have lost one parent, while others have ailing, disabled parents who are unable to make two ends meet. In some cases, the parents work as agricultural coolies with seasonal and often unreliable wages.

The Basics

• St. Joseph Matriculation School admits such children and provides partially sponsored or free education depending on the economic status of the parents.
• TheTrust raises donations from the trustees and other philanthropists for the educational expenditure of these children. Often these funds prove insufficient and the Trust takes loans to manage the expenditure.

The Statistics

• The school has a combined strength of 400 students.
• Currently 100 students, from poor families have been admitted to the school.

An aspiring Priyalakshmi
Priyalakshmi is studying in Grade 9 in our St. Joseph Matriculation School, Venthanpatti. Her father Nallathambi passed away 10 years back. Her mother Selvi was working as a daily wage labourer. Priyalakshmi has an elder brother by name Kanagavel studying in Grade 11. After the husband’s demise, the mother & children were under the care of grandfather. The family could not support the education of the children along with the other day to day expenses. At this stage Selvi managed to approach our Trust for help through her neighbours.
Our volunteers and trustees looked into her situation and decided to help the children. So we admitted both the children in our school and educated them both through scholarship programme for the past 4 years. Priyalakshmi is a bright student and therefore the Trust provides for her education under scholarship programme.
Priyalaskshmi performs well in her studies and puts forward in all the extra-curricular activities. She is regular in her attendance. She aspires to become a software engineer and is good at core subjects. The mother Selvi is relieved to see that her children are getting a good education and is now happy that the children are coming up in their lives.
