Four year old Jamila is lucky to be alive. Her family stay in Rafiq Nagar. Four year old Jamila is lucky to be alive. Her family stay in Rafiq Nagar. In December 2004, her family?s hut was bulldozed as part of a demolition drive, forcing the family to camp out in the open. Her parents struggled to make ends meet.Jamila?s older sister became sick with a severe chest infection and died, basically due to malnutrition.

Jamila too became thinner. Apnalaya started a special nutrition programme;Jamila was enrolled. A medical check showed she was severely under weight and in the 3rd degree of malnutrition. Her mother joined the mothers? group in which she learned about the needs and the care of young children from the community health workers, and she could share her problems and anxieties.

A year into the programme Jamila, though still underweight, has moved up from 3rd to 1st degree malnutrition. Luck seems to have changed for the family as her father has found a job with a regular income. But they remain in temporary shelter on the very edge of the dumping ground, still waiting for the Municipal Corporation to decide the fate of this vulnerable community.
