Success Story

When Ismail came to the Apnalaya Counselling Centre for help he was desperate. When Ismail came to the Apnalaya Counselling Centre for help he was desperate. He and his wife Shamim live in Bainganwadi in Govandi where Ismail has a small leather business. Both of them had suffered frequent bouts of ill health when eventually they were diagnosed to be HIV+ve. Shamim had become very ill and was in JJ hospital when Ismail approached Apnalaya.

Ismail had had very bad experiences in government hospitals; he finally agreed to go provided the counsellor go with him. Shamim was accepted for ART as her CD4 count was very low. With treatment, her condition improved. However Ismail became so sick that he had to stop working, and their financial situation worsened. Apnalaya staff accompanied him to Sion hospital where he finally started ART.

The effect of ART on the condition of both of them is good. Shamim was given a sewing machine by Apnalaya and was soon able to start earning money by stitching clothes. Ismail also improved and again struggled to restart his small business. Today the health of both of them is much better. But they are the lucky ones. Only a very few of the people who come to Apnalaya for help are accepted for ART.
