Had Jabbo been able to attend Apnalaya Daycare Centre earlier, her problems would have been recognised.12 year old Jabbo stays in Rafi Nagar, one of the poorest slum communities on the edge of the dumping ground where Apnalaya works. She is a mentally challenged girl. Jabbo was enrolled in a municipal school nearby, but year was not able to keep up with the studies.

Apnalaya staff counselled the parents to enrol Jabbo in a special school. But the nearest school was in Chembur, some distance away. The first time they went by bus on their own they got lost, which was a frightening and exhausting experience for them both. The encouragement and support given by the Apnalaya staff paid off, and Jabbo attends school regularly.

Jabbo goes to school by public transport in a group with other children. She has gained confidence, mixes well and is tremendously enthusiastic to learn whatever the school can teach her. Her mother is happy now, and comes to report on Jabbo?s progress. Apnalaya is reaching out to many more children like Jabbo through the Daycare Centre, a part of the Challenger Project.
