Mission/Vision
To build and replicate a model of low cost, high quality, child-centred education for the children in the economically weaker sections of society and empowering women in these communities by training them to become teachers.

Background
Muktangan an initiative of PCT is an educational programme offering alternatives to orthodox education practices. Muktangan provides sustainable low cost, high quality English medium education for economically deprived sections of the society

Elizabeth Mehta Founder Trustee of Muktangan has worked at all levels of education including extensive work in rural India. She has been involved in every aspect of school education from designing schools, managing them and developing child-centred curricula. She has also conducted classroom based pedagogical research and has participated in several national and international conferences and study tours. At Muktangan Mrs Mehta oversees the programmatic aspects of the now eight schools and teacher education institute. She says: 2013-2014 has been a very important and emotional year for many of us at Muktangan. In the year 2003 when we started Muktangan as a Balwadi project, my only intention was to prove that it was possible to run a child-centred pre-school within the mainstream system, where teachers had great motivation to develop children from their own communities and the students reciprocated with enormous belief in their teachers.

 Learning with a difference
Education of children in schools and teachers in colleges is driven by an exam oriented route learning cycle resulting in them gathering information without building a conceptual understanding of the subject matter. Muktangan provides an inclusive, community driven, active - constructive model of school and teacher education that integrates the two by training members from underserved communities to be teachers to children from the same communities making education relevant and contextual. Muktangan''s low students to teacher ratio i.e. 15:1 allows teachers to observe individual student learning and build a curriculum that caters to the developing needs of each child. Muktangan''s interactive curriculum allows students to take active part in their learning experience and thus build an interest to learning and education. Students at Muktangan have a more conceptual understanding of the subject matter being taught at school. A total of 154 students have passed out of Muktangan''s pilot school over the last 3 years with 86% of these students receiving a first class and above. 18 of these students being certified with various learning disabilities and passed the exam with an average score of 77%. The six additional schools run under the Muktangan initiative have added a new std. 9 class in the academic year 2016-17 bringing the total number of students studying at Muktngan''s 7 schools to approx. 3393. Students at Muktangan are also given opportunities to develop holistically through participation in co-curricular activities such as Art, Dance, Music, IT and Sports and regularly participate in internal and external events.

 A Healthy Change
It was found during observations in class that many children did not eat breakfast before coming to school. Parents also did not understand the importance of providing their children with nutritious meals for breakfast and lunch. During our Parent-Teacher workshops which happen at least thrice a year, we created awareness among the parents of the importance of giving their children a healthy breakfast in the morning as well as how to cook well nutritious lunch for them. At the end of these sessions the parents were made to sign an agreement that they would give more importance to their child’s nutrition. We at Muktangan support this intervention by providing the students with the nutritious fruit everyday. It was noticed after this intervention that students started having breakfast before coming to school and their parents packed more wholesome lunches for them.
