Mission/Vision
To create an enlightened society in which the 50 plus feel secure, confident and valued; and can live with dignity.

Background
In 1995 the activities of the Foundation were started with the publication of the magazine Dignity Dialogue. It grew into a service delivery organisation responding to the expressed needs conveyed by the senior citizens themselves. Dignity Foundation is premised upon scientific developments in the fields of Geriatrics and Gerontology. It offers structural opportunities to exercise the choice of how to live healthy and active in chronologically advancing years.

Dr Sheilu Sreenivasan, whose passion for the cause of senior citizens launched the organisation in 1995, is the Founder President. An MA in Psychiatric Social Work from Madras University, she took her Ph.D from Mumbai University in Sociology. After a seven-year period in research she joined the publishing firm, Macmillan India and became Corporate Manager in Bangalore. She then became Head of Publishing in Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, in 1987. Sheilu Sreenivasan specialised abroad in academic publishing and has been the recipient of many awards from reputed organisations in India such as the Rotary Club and the Times of India for her social work. In Feb 2004, she was instrumental in setting up the Govt. of Maharashtra Institute of Empowered and Productive Ageing at Yashada, Pune. This was set up as a Think Tank for the Govt to initiate policies for older persons in the state. She was one of the initial members on the Board.

 Anna Daan Maha Daan
Mrs. Maya (age 79) lives with her husband (age 82). They had a son, married. Suddenly the son died of a heart attack. Only 3 of them were left. The daughter-in-law was too young so they got her re married in a good family after getting consent from her and her family. They were left with no one to help them support. Maya started going for cooking at some places as husband was not keeping well and the only earning person –their son was no more. She was earning around 2 to 3 thousand due to old age unable to do more work. She was finding it extremely difficult to manage even two meals a day for both of them. Maya approached Dignity Foundation through a friend and requested for monthly ration. A Dignity Volunteer did a home visit to evaluate whether they really need it. It was confirmed after the home visit that they were really a needy couple and so monthly ration was started. Maya has a great relief now as she has a helping hand in the form of monthly ration from Dignity Foundation. Now she carries on with her cooking job without worry for her own next meal. Earlier the worry of not being able to provide for food in case of any illness or loss of job was plaguing her. Now that fear has gone with the monthly ration provision from Dignity Foundation.
