Mission/Vision
One day equip all students with the education, skills and character they need to lead empowered lives.

Background
Shaheen Mistri started the Akanksha Foundation in 1991. When she was 18 years old she visited her grandparents who were in Bombay, and on that particular visit of hers, she saw the inequality in education between the private and the public schools.

Saurabh Taneja is the founding school leader of Acharya Vinoba Bhave School, Akanksha's first stand-alone secondary school (Gr 8-10) which was started in 2013. During the 4-years of school leadership, he has ensured that ALL students pass the high stakes Gr 10 exam and join the junior college. The school's success has inspired Akanksha, other organizations and local government authorities to start similar school models in the city, taking the number of such schools to 8. Before joining Akanksha Foundation, he worked extensively with Bodh Shiksha Samiti, UNICEF and Govt. of Rajasthan on large scale school transformation project, influencing key policy level changes at state government level. Saurabh is also a Teach for India fellow, and taught for two years in a government run school in sub-urban Mumbai. It was the challenges that his students and parents faced in ensuring continuity of schooling beyond Grade 7, that made him aware of systemic void because of which several students were slipping through the cracks. He has completed his Bachelors in Technology from prestigious Indian Institute of Delhi.

 Vedika Kamble
Vedika came to school as a very shy, quiet child. She never uttered a word in class and would only communicate through gestures. Her family was very concerned since they thought she might have speech issues. Akanksha staff spoke to her parents to find out what her situation was at home. The staff pushed Vedika to speak and participate in class and also in group activities. With personal attention and longer school time Vedika eventually came out of her shell and built her confidence and self esteem. Vedika is now one of the brightest students in Junior KG. She scored really well in her assessments. She speaks up in class, answers questions and shows an active involvement in class activities and participates willingly. She not only interacts with teachers and peers from her class but also initiates conversations with peers and teachers from other classes.

 Jayesh Satpute
Jayesh comes from a broken family wherein his mother left him at the age of 2. He lives with his father and paternal grandmother, both of whom are alcoholics and are constantly fighting with each other. There were days when Jayesh came to school without any food, proper uniform and was completely distracted in class. He disobeyed instructions and used to often sleep in class. At Akanksha, Jayesh received a lot of one on one attention academically as well as personally. He was treated with a lot of love and support from the entire Akanksha staff since that was something he never got at home. Teachers instilled confidence in him and helped him face the challenges and obstacles he faced and continues to face at home. Jayesh found solace at Sitaram Podar School, managed by Akanksha. He showed a great improvement in his overall behavior. He is calmer and obeys rules. He loves being in school and even stays after school hours and spends time reading and practicing his spoken and written English with the Akanksha staff.
