To evolve a sustainable and replicable model for an effective and decentralized public school system based on good management practices
 
Background
According to data, 76 percent of the rural households in India send their children to government or government-aided schools. The ASER assessment data of all Indian states submitted by the organisation Pratham, states that only 40 percent of the children studying in V class in rural government schools in India can read level 2 (Class II) text and only 20 percent of them can do division. Sikshana felt the need to improve the learning levels among children studying in government school. The organisation was started by a group of like-minded professionals in the year 2002 and began its work by adopting a few government primary schools based in and around Bangalore. Today, Sikshana reaches out to nearly 3 lakh children across 2,000 schools in the State of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra.
 
V.R Prasanna,CEO of the foundation came on board in 2007.Under his stewardship, Sikshana has grown from 49 schools to cover over 44,000 schools across Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh in 10 years.Prior to his engagement with Sikshana, he was the Founder CEO of Softrends, Inc USA for 10 years, where he designed Transaction Processing Software Systems. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from S. J. College of Engineering, Mysore and a Master's in Computer Engineering from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas.

1 Dr Ashoka Gurudas A physician by profession. He completed his M.B.B.S. from J.N.M.C. Belgaum, Karnataka University in the year 1981. Subsequently, he acquired a postgraduate specialization as Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from Bangalore Medical College. He has worked as a lecturer in General Medicine at M.S. Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore.
2 Balamuralikrishna A A highly successful Chartered Accountant, with an extensive practice both in India and abroad. His personal interest in assisting social causes drew him to work with Sikshana.
3 Indira Sharma A Post-graduate in Business Administration from the University of Mysore, she received State and University-level awards for her excellent academic performance. She is presently Vice-President in a large, reputed company, responsible for marketing its products in a highly competitive environment. She has a strong parallel interest in primary education, to which she devotes considerable effort and time
4 Prashanth Prakash A partner at Accel Partners, India a venture capital firm based out of the Silicon Valley. He holds a Masters degree in Computer Science from the University of Delaware, USA, and an Undergraduate degree, in Computer Science, from the Bangalore Institute of Technology, India.
5 Dr V Sastry Director of RelQ, holds an Electrical Engineering degree from REC Warangal and a PhD in Computer Applications from the University of Waterloo in Canada. 7 Ravindra Krishnappa An Angel Investor and Product / Start-up incubation specialist. Currently he is the founder Director, VertEXperts Consulting LLP. Previoiusly he was the Director and Co-Founder of Inatech Infosolutions Pvt. Ltd. and has been in the IT industry for more than two decades.

Prasanna joined Sikshana Foundation in the year 2007 and has been focused on evolving and implementing Sikshana model, aligning strategies for engagement and increasing responsiveness with stakeholders.  Impact of providing unlimited writing sheets on learning levels and writing for Exams.
Several schools lack writing and reading resources. The children find writing difficult because of lack of practice. Such schools are provided with writing sheets, diaries, writing material and dictionaries. Continuous and unrestricted writing increases the hand eye coordination, focus and ability to write long sentences for the exams. All of the above combined helps in the improvement of academic skills among children. Children are given a set of sheets every week and are encouraged to fill and use them up by the end of the week. The ‘used sheets’ are exchanged for a fresh set. This exercise has produced quantified results showing a drastic improvement in the speed and quality of writing in majority of the students. In addition, the schools are enabled to optimize the utilization of the available resources and are guided in developing a road map for development. With the Writing sheet program, writing speed of the children and their performance in academics has improved. The writing sheet exhibition and competition gave the children an opportunity to showcase their improved handwriting work and also inspired several other children too.
