A world where the disabled get an equal opportunity to participate and work with dignity.
There are virtually no employment opportunities for the disabled in Guwahati. Thus, economic rehabilitation of the disabled was an issue which needed to be addressed. Mr. Kaushik Das left his job to start Atma Nirbhar-Ek Challenge to address this issue.
Mr. Bhaskar Barua, the President of Managing Committee of Atma Nirbhar – Ek Challenge is a retired officer of the Indian Administrative Services and was formerly the Chief Secretary of Assam. In his long and illustrious career he has held many prestigious positions including a stint in the United Nations for two and a half years.

 Spreading Sunshine
The disadvantaged and marginalized people living in residential, welfare institutions feel themselves left out from the mainstream society. They feel forgotten and neglected by the outside world. It is generally a lonely life for the residents, without anything to look forward to. We started visiting the institutions at regular intervals, specially, ahead of the major local festivals like Bihu, Holi, Diwali etc. We always carried with us useful and recreational items, together with some snacks to share with the residents. We also arrange celebrations of birthdays and special occasions of the outside public in these institutions. This program bridged the gap between the residents and the outside public. The gifts were appreciated by the residents as well as the Managements of the institutions. The residents started looking forward to our visits and appeared to be more positive and cheerful. They felt these were truly gifts of kindness.
 Disability to Contributing Productive Worker.
Tulu is a speech and hearing impaired person. Her eyesight is also weak. She lives with her elder sister and her family as she lost her parents when she was a child. She used to feel a burden on her sister and her family as she could not contribute anything to the family bread basket. Atma Nirbhar - Ek Challenge means Self Reliance - a Challenge. It is an economic rehabilitation project for the disabled --- to help the disabled to work with dignity and earn a living. Tulu packages teas and helps in cooking and cleaning the centre. Tulu was languishing at home, forever feeling guilty that she was a burden on her sister s family. We offered her employment in our small unit and her life changed. Today, she has self-esteem that she is a contributing and productive member of the society. She is working with dignity and earning a living.
