Mission/Vision
A world where the disabled get an equal opportunity to participate and work with dignity.

Background
There are virtually no employment opportunities for the disabled in Guwahati. Thus, economic rehabilitation of the disabled was an issue which needed to be addressed. Mr. Kaushik Das left his job to start Atma Nirbhar-Ek Challenge to address this issue.

Mr. Bhaskar Barua, the President of Managing Committee of Atma Nirbhar – Ek Challenge is a retired officer of the Indian Administrative Services and was formerly the Chief Secretary of Assam. In his long and illustrious career he has held many prestigious positions including a stint in the United Nations for two and a half years.

 Spreading Sunshine
Though the homeless and disadvantaged sections of society have residential welfare institutions to look after them, they often feel neglected by mainstream society, and end up leading a lonely life, with not much to look forward to. In an effort to bridge this gap, we visit these institutions at regular intervals, specially during major local festivals like Bihu, Holi, and Diwali. We celebrate these occasions with the residents by taking snacks and recreational games with us. We also arrange for the general public to celebrate their birthdays and special occasions with the residents of these institutions. This program helped us bridge the gap between the residents and outside public. This led to the residents looking forward to our visits with great energy and enthusiasm. The gifts were also appreciated by the residents as well as the Management of the institutions.

 Disability to Contributing Productive Worker.
Having lost both her parents, Tulu lives with her elder sister's family. Her weak eyesight and hearing and speech impairment, affected her ability to earn money which made her feel like a burden on her sister. Atma Nirbhar - Ek Challenge (which translates to Self Reliance - a Challenge), is an economic rehabilitation project for the disabled that helps them become independent. As part of this project, Tulu got the chance to earn her bread and become more independent. Tulu, who was earlier languishing from guilt at being unproductive, is now extremely happy with her independence. Her work here, which involves packaging tea and cleaning the centre not only gives her economic independence, but an enhanced sense of confidence and self-worth.
