Mission/Vision
To liberate the underprivileged from the vicious cycle of poverty and illiteracy by serving children with nutritious meal that attracts and keeps them in school thereby enhancing their educational experience

Background
The genesis of ISKCON Food Relief Foundation (IFRF) dates back to 1974, when His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, Founder-Ācārya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), noticed a group of village children fighting with street dogs over scraps of food. Shocked and saddened by what he saw, he turned to his disciples and said, “No one within a ten mile radius of our temples should go hungry”. When the Government of India launched a strategic program in 1994 called the Midday Meal Scheme to fight two of the most pressing problems of India – hunger and illiteracy, IFRF saw a great opportunity for providing children with the right nutrition to support their education.

Dr.Ravindra Khatanhar is the Administrative Advisor of the Trust. He is a Dental Surgeon from Nair Hospital Dental College, University of Bombay and was in private practice from 1969 to 1986. He was the President of the Lions Club in Vile Parle East in 1980. He has served as the Secretary of the Governing Body Commission of ISKCON Worldwide from the year 2000 to 2005. He says: Really this project is not about feeding, it is about educating. Most of these children who come from economically weaker sections, their parents would rather have them go and do some child labour like rag picking, pocket picking or some such menial jobs. But these children, attend school because of the food that they get there, will in the course get educated and their future as citizens of this country will definitely be much better. And this is a boon to the society at large.

 A Healthy and Happy Child
Hitesh is a 10-year-old child who lives with his parents in Palgar city, Thane District in Maharashtra. Both his parents work at the construction site. They leave early in the morning for work. She prepares a cup of tea for Hitesh and leaves. Hitesh has only this in the morning and goes to school without eating anything. He would also not have anything to eat in the school for lunch. His mother would come back in the evening and cook some food, which he would then eat. This would be his first proper meal. He would be too tired and weak to focus on his studies and therefore would go straight to sleep. ISKCON Food Relief Foundation started its Midday Meal Program in all the Schools at Palghar giving great hope to many children like Hitesh, to facilitate their education and realize their dream. Hitesh says – as ISKCON Food Relief Foundation started its midday meal program at our school, I got a great hope. My health got improved and I was able to focus on my studies. Now I feel confident and I aspire to become an Engineer.
