Mission/Vision
To establish a health system for the tribals in the Gudalur valley. The Gudalur Adivasi Hospital and the area centers should be accessable, acceptable , effective and sustainable. It should be owned and managed by the community.

Background
The Tribals of Gudalur had no access to health care. Deaths, from causes that were easily preventable, were rampant. The tribal numbers were dwindling. ASHWINI was started to tackle this problem.

Dr Nandakumar is the founder member of ASHWINI and the Director of Gudalur Adivasi Hospital. He did his surgical training in the US and came back to India to work for the tribals. Quote- "It does not matter if you save a life by giving Intravenous fluids or by doing a complicated surgery. The bottom line is that you have saved a life."

 Story of Shanthi
On the verandas of their thatched huts, tribals lay down to die when they fall ill as they had no money to access healthcare. Shanthi too would have been would have been one such case. The Gudalur Adivasi Hospital was set up for the tribals. All the staff too were tribals. The community was encouraged to seek healthcare. Shanthi had a high fever from a huge breast abscess. She had to be admitted for many days. The family was in financial difficulty. She was given some free meals- whatever th family could not afford. She went home well and the family did not get into debt.

 She lives today
12 year old Mary (name changed) was brought to Gudalur adivasi hospital in a state of coma. Dr Nandakumar and the nursing team struggled to get her back to life. They intubated her as her oxygenation was falling. But she was not recovering. We transported her to Calicut Medical College in an ambulance, endotracheal tube, IV, Oxygen and all. She got expert care. She came back a week later, totally cured. But for the tertiary care, she would not be alive today.

 Preventing morbidity from dental infections
The tribals of Gudalur did not have a concept of dental care. Many suffered from severe dental infections. We screened all school children for dental problems and educated them about dental hygiene. All cavities were filled. None of these children suffer from caries teeth now. They understand the need for oral and dental hygiene.

 A major deformity avoided
The tribals of the Gudalur valley had no access to health care. The Gudalur Adivasi Hospital was set up for the tribal community. Health seeking behavior was encouraged. 10 year old Vasu (name changed) had a fall. His parents immediately brought him to hospital. He had fractured his arm. He was given treatment for a small payment. His arm healed well and a major deformity was avoided.
