Mission/Vision

Background
Vimukti Sanstha was set up as a society in 2004 in Jaipur .Our mission is to combat and overcome the vulnerability of underprivileged young girls by providing literacy and education in an effort to make them self-reliant and self-employed citizens.

Mr.Arun Kumar is the head of the organisation. He is a Retd.I.A.S officer of Rajasthan. He held various positions in the government of Rajasthan. He was also the chief secretary of Rajasthan for 2 years. Starting with 30 girls in 2004, Vimukti now has around 600 girls from ages 5 to 17 years across grades KG to X. 95% of the students at Vimukti are from socially backward classes including minority communities and their average family income is less than Rs 100000 annually for an average family size of 5. Further, parents of most of the girls are daily wage earners and hence do not have a regular income. Many a times even if fathers earn, they do not support the family and spend all their earnings on drinking and hence the mothers are forced to work but since they are hardly educated, they can only manage to work as domestic helps or cooks which fetches them little money to take care of all the expenses. Obviously in that case sending their daughters to school is not a priority for them.

 Help her live her dreams
Swati Baghel is 13 years old. Her father is a driver & mother is a housewife. She has 3 siblings-a brother & two sisters. Her father was finding it difficult to educate all the children due to limited income. Swati and her sisters at that time were studying in some other school but financial constraint forced them to drop out. Her father was not happy with this but had no choice. He discussed this problem with his employer who was aware of Vimukti School and advised him to admit his daughters in Vimukti Girls School. Swati and her sister were admitted in Vimukti in 2012 after the due completion of the admission process . Swati is in Grade 8 now. Swati is an intelligent girl and has high aspirations. In her own words-I love my school very much, I have many friends here and I have learnt so many thing like making cards, diyas and rakhis. I love to have the snacks and milk provided here every day. Last year, I participated in sports day and stood first in the race. I love to study science. My aim is to become a doctor so that I can serve the society. I will always be there to help the poor just as my teachers help us.

Vimukti snack helps girls sustain all day
Priyanka Jogi is 17 years old and studies in Grade 8. She lives in the Jawahar Nagar slum with her mother, 2 younger brothers & 2 younger sisters. Her father passed away eight years back. After his death, her mother started selling tissue papers on roads. Sometime back, she had to go undergo Appendicitis operation. Since then she has developed other medical complications and is bedridden. Now there is no source of income in the family. Sometimes Priyanka goes to sell tissue papers but is not able to earn much. It’s been seven years since Priyanka joined our school. Earlier, her main reason to come here was the daily meal provided here, i.e. milk and snacks because her mother was not able to give them proper food. Priyanka attends school regularly. The snack provided in the school help her to sustain through the day. There are times when the entire family remains without food for entire day. In her words, I take part in all the activities of the school including sports and crafts. I love to study now. Last year I got good marks in my annual exams and I was given a double promotion. I want to become a teacher who can teach the poor children just as my teachers do. My teachers trained me in making rakhis & diya. Now I make them & sell them so I can earn money to help my family.

 Attend school with dignity
The community that Vimukti caters to is either so poor that they cannot afford two proper meals for their daughters or they do not wish to spend money on girls. The girls when they first arrive in school; their clothes are old, dirty and torn. Most of them wear chappals and come to school. Vimukti Sanstha distributes one set of uniform, shoes, winter clothes to all the students every year when the new session begins. The students now come to school in proper uniforms. This also instills a sense of dignity in them-they have an identity just like any other child attending school. It also brings in required discipline-they tend to take care of their uniforms-ensure that the same are washed regularly, they polish their shoes. Every girl has her own set of books and copies-this makes them enthusiastic and keen to learn.

 Free & Safe Vimukti Transport
Komal Khateek is 17 years old and studies in Grade 9 at Vimukti Girls School. She was very young when her father passed away. She has two younger brothers. Her mother is a vegetable seller and she does not earn enough to afford my education expenses. When Komal was in class I in another school which charged fee, her mother decided to discontinue her schooling. Not only was she unable bear the expense of fee but commuting to the school was also a problem. Her mother came to know through her neighbor that Vimukti provides free education. She brought Komal to the school but had concerns about her commuting. If she was to drop & pick Komal, again the issue of money and time arose and if she was to send her alone-her safety was a big concern. Till then she was not aware that Vimukti also provides free transport hence she was reluctant to admit Komal in the school. She agreed to send Komal to school once she was explained what all facilities Vimukti provides including free transport. Komal joined in class II. Komal is a regular student, she has made many friends here and wants to become a doctor when she grows up.
