Antarang envisions a world where every young person is productively, positively and passionately engaged in a vocation of their choice.
Priya Agrawal and Lopa Gandhi have worked extensively with adolescents from low income settlements. The gap between education and employment was a big one to bridge – and without employment education seemed meaningless and added to the frustration of youth from these disadvantaged communities. Youth tended to drop out and meander aimlessly at the vulnerable 16 – 18 year age group. Thus was born an intervention that looked at specific career outcomes that gave purpose and direction to their lives. Antarang started with a pilot group of 20 youth from slums across Mumbai in a 6 weekend intervention. The success of that pilot and the resultant placement of >50% of youth from that group slowly led to more groups and more partnerships.
Priya Agrawal has held key leadership roles in the social sector, having headed organisations like The Akanksha Foundation and SNEHA in the past.

I can see the Future Now
Y is a sprightly 16 year old at the Parel Night School. She works as domestic help with a family in a nearby highrise. She heard of this night school and decided to enroll herself here, much against the wishes of her family who were not happy to see her go to school instead of earning another Rs 3500 a month extra. Y’s days are long -she is up at 5 am, and after finishing her household chores is off to work at 8 am. She works until 5pm, goes home, studies and rests a while and gets to school at 630 pm. Her mother keeps heckling her that a 10th standard or a 12th standard is not going to help very much. Y underwent the 2 week Career Aware program where she identified and understood her strengths and challenges, acknowledged her interests and aptitudes and knew what careers she could look at. Based on the 11 careers that the facilitator discussed with them in the class, Y decided that she would do a course in baking and confectionary and start a small business. She understood that she needed to pass her class 10 exams to qualify for the same. Y could see her future clearly now and worked hard to make it possible. She had a goal to work towards and knew that she could access her Antarang facilitator at any time, should she need more clarity. Her counseling session was one of the happiest moments for her where the future of her choice seemed possible.
 An Unbelievable transformation
X was a Grade 12 pass from Bihar and living in the MHADA slums doing odd jobs as an electrician. He lacked confidence and had no direction in his life. He did whatever jobs came his way and earned sporadically. X joined our 3 monthEmployAbility program where he took stock of his aptitude, interests and reality and learnt about the various careers available to him. He learnt what it takes to be employable and successful, work ethics and attitudes that will help him get ahead despite his lack of a strong educational background Today he is employed with a top rated microfinance organization and earns Rs 9,100 per month. He has successfully completed his training and is now in the probation period. The rise in confidence and self-esteem is evident for all to see.
