Uplift of Poor ; Unbounded Cheer
Sevalaya was started in 1988. Inspired by Mahakavi Bharathiyar who spoke of providing for educating the poor and Swami Vivekananda whose thrust was to address hunger and poverty, Sevalaya also drew inspiration from Gandhi efforts to improve rural India.
Mr. V. Muralidharan, a product of Indian Institute of Science, is the founder and managing trustee of Sevalaya. It was a poem of MahakaviBharathiyar, which he happened to read when he was 11 years old wherein Bharathiyar has exhorted that the real SaraswathiPooja is to provide education to at least 1 poor child, the seed for Sevalaya germinated in the mind of Muralidharan. The current dream-The burning ambition- of Muralidharan now is to start a rural university absolutely free of charge for the poor. And to achieve this dream he has now given up his lucrative software career and has dedicated himself full time for Sevalaya. Muralidharan strongly feels that poverty should not be a hurdle for any child to have access to quality education / better opportunities, which will help the child to overcome the poverty and attain a good position in life.

The Elderly Find Much Deserved Dignity
There are a number of old people who are abused, abandoned and uncared for. They are often thrown out of their homes with no means of support or livelihood-a common sight in many places today. Sevalaya has started an Old Age Home with all facilities offers this place to destitute elderly free of cost.Being able to interact with Sevalaya s Children s home offers both the children and the elderly an opportunity to show affection and love. Activities also include Religious discourses and other recreation. The elderly in Sevalayas old age home now live a life of dignity Several of them participate in helping to run the home effectively. There is renewed hope and cheer in their lives.
 A Bright Future
Ilayaraja lost his father when he was very young. His mother was selling peanuts in a railway station. She had 2 more children who were elder to Ilayaraja., She was struggling to even feed her children, let alone educating them The mother placed Ilaya raja in the care of Sevalaya. Sevalaya provided him shelter and food, a home away from home and also educated him. Ilayaraja was a very bright student With Sevalaya s support he joined Polytechnic after he completed his X and finished his diploma in Computer Science Engineering Ilayaraja is employed in Tata Consultancy Services. He visits the service centre and is a living role model for the children of Sevalaya and a member of Board of Trustees. Ilayaraja says Sevalaya is solely responsible for my growth. Now I want to give back to society and do my bit and make sure that other kids at Sevalaya come up in life like me.
