Mission/Vision
To enhance the delivery of public health care system to the needy children & mother and thereby infant, childhood , adolecent and maternal mortality rates.

Background
Dr Sailakshmi founded Ekam Foundation in 2007 to address the need to lower Infant Mortality Rates in TN. A paediatrician by profession who graduated from Hyderabad, her experience as an intern in one of the city government hospitals was close to harrowing. Owing to many years of neglect, public healthcare facilities often suffer from a variety of problems, including worker absenteeism, shortages of supplies and staff. Every day, there were preventable deaths that were being registered. Although they were exceptionally skilled doctors available, there was nothing that she or the rest of the staff could do to bring down the mortality rates simply because of the lack of financial resources.

Started by Dr Sailakshmi after witnessing children dying because of lack of quality health care because of financial constraints. Started initially in 2006 in Mehta Children hospital by networking with paediatricians and orphanages in Chennai.

 Om gains confidence
Master Om Dhonar was suffering from Telecanthus (abnormal distance between eyes) and Ptosis (dropping of eyelids) and was operated in both eyes. His father was jobless at the time he was hospitalised. His family struggled to meet his medical expenses at seeking financial support. Om is able to see and read properly. His family is very grateful. His parents said: We are happy that Ekam Foundation stepped in to help us financially to give our son better eyesight. He can now see and read without any pain and will able to pursue his academics with confidence. Ekam Foundation got an intimation from the KJ Bacchuhaji hospital to support him financially.

 Akshaya back on her feet
8-year-old Akshaya is the daughter of Rajkumar and Selvi. Their family is economically very poor, Rajkumar is an auto driver of a rented autorickshaw. He earns about Rs.300 to 400 per day. He is sole bread winner of the family. He has two children. On 1st January 2014 Akshaya complained of a pain in her neck and was treated at a local clinic in her native place. But the problem persisted. The next day the child became critical and her hand and legs stopped moving. She was admitted at PICU in the Institute of Child Health, Egmore, Chennai. Doctors advised an MRI at Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital. Due her her fragile condition Akshaya was transferred to Kanchi Kamakoti Child Trust Hospital on 3rd Jan 2014 for further treatment but as there was no ventilator available she was moved to Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre (SRMC). Timely intervention from Ekam helped save the child from her life threatening disease. Akshaya is now able to walk and is active through physiotherapy care provided by Ekam Foundation. Her three-day stay at ICU cost her parents nearly Rs.1 lac which they some how managed through the loans. Her parents got know about Ekam Foundation while they were seeking financial support to save their child’s life. Ekam Foundation supported her entire hospitalization and medicines from the day they approached. Ekam also provided IVIG injections. Akshaya was treated at Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at SRMC and was discharged on 10th Feb 2014. After her discharge Ekam Foundation supported her physiotherapy treatment.
