Mission/Vision
Help the underprivileged and marginalized live a better tomorrow through various interventions.

Background
A group of seven students with most of their colleagues of school or college started distributing notebooks to the poor students in 1968 and one of the major source of funds was collection of old newspapers donated by the well-wishers. Total annual income in the first year was Rs.3,000/-. Gradually they expanded their activities to providing uniforms and other requirements to the deserving students. Gradually, as the funds flowed in, cases requiring medical assistance and relief were also included as additional activities.

 Little indulgence works miracles
Irshad Khan, Age: 33, has been suffering from Schizophrenia for the last 10 years. He was working as an office boy in a private firm. Due to his mental illness his attendance was not regular, which consequently cost him his job. His family consists of 6 members, which include his wife and two children and parents. After he lost the job the only earning member in the family was his father who earned Rs.3,000/- per month and who worked as a telephone booth operator. Their father approached us at MESCO for assistance. His case study was done and he was referred to KEM Hospital for check up. On recommendation from Doctor from KEM Hospital he has started treatment for a period of 6 months. The monthly cost of his medicines is around Rs.6,000/- which being borne by MESCO. As a result of continued treatment his mental health has improved and he has taken up a job to support his father.

 A struggle for survival
Deepali Patil 35 years old was diagnosed as a case of renal failure when she was a student of Std. X (in 1992). One after the other her both kidneys failed, at this stage her mother donated one of her kidneys to help her daughter survive. After transplant in 2006, unfortunately condition of this kidney also began to worsen and finally it failed to function. Deepali didn’t give up and took dialysis, the only option left for her in order to survive. She started approaching charitable organizations to get the funds for dialysis. Deepali’s family consists of 7 members including her old parents, a brother, his wife and two children and total family income (that of Deepali and her brother) is Rs. 7500/-. Deepali who had completed her diploma in multimedia and web designing had taken up a job, which she had to leave on account of constant health problems and need to continue to seek assistance for dialysis in order to survive. In December 2010 she approached MESCO for help. Her case has been reviewed and selected for the six months dialysis cost. Each of her dialysis costs Rs.450 at Shri K.V.O. Jain M.S.K. As per the nephrologist she has to carry out 12 dialyses per month, for which we pay Rs.5400 per month. Deepali with the support of MESCO has been able to continue her dialysis treatment. With the improvement in her health she is back on the job and hopes to live many more years ahead. If we keep on receiving donations constantly she will be relieved of stress of searching for other supporting organizations. Can we do that together?

 Struggle for Survival
Mrs. Asma Shaikh is a 46-year-old widow for whom life has been a constant fight for survival for the last few years, ever since her husband, a labourer, expired. She stays in a small hut (which has neither electricity nor water connection) with her two daughters, near the railway tracks at Kurla. The girls are small, the elder thirteen years old had her leg amputated due to a train accident. Asma is surviving day to day selling vegetable door to door in the area, making barely Rs.100/- per day. She also has to take care of her ailing mother out of her meager income. We found Asma living in the most inhuman conditions, not even managing two square meals a day, the two children, highly under nourished. (one of her daughter died due to malnutrition) We took her up under our Ration Support programme, under this scheme she receives dry ration, which includes cereals, pulses, lentils, gram, oil, sugar etc. The family is able to meet its basic needs, Asma is able to look after her mother’s medical needs; the two daughters are going to school, their nutritional status has improved and they can concentrate better on their studies.

 A step towards self reliance
Ms. Mujiba*, a resident of Bhiwandi was deserted by her husband, hence she moved to Mumbai, with her four children. She started working on daily wages as a laborer in Dharavi near her shared residence. It was tough time feeding 4 small children. We provided her with a new sewing machine, as she knew tailoring. She started stitching ladies purses and earned comparatively more than what she was getting earlier as a laborer. At present she is able to generate Rs. 5000 per month, by stitching more items bags, purses and similar other items and shifted to Chembur in a better rented accommodation. Her elder daughter has completed Beautician Course and is able to support her mother by taking up casual work. Her two younger daughters and a son are studying in school. Thus she is almost self reliant and is able to educate her children, which could not have been possible without the initial support in shape of Sewing Machine.
