Over 32% of all 8th Std. students in rural Tamil Nadu are unable to read local language texts for the 2nd Std.. and 64% of them cannot even do subtraction and addition, let alone divisions.
This is where you can make a difference - and prevent these children from wasting away in some corner of India’s vast rural scape.
Isha Vidhya, since 2006, has developed in-depth expertise on catering to the special needs of children in a rural setting utilizing an array of innovative methodologies.
Activity based learning, computer aided classes, state of the art maths and science labs, an emphasis on sports, arts and yoga and above all highly motivated, well trained, methodology savvy teachers along with a large volunteer base are the cornerstones of our success.
The holistic, activity-based approach nurtures children’s development beyond just academics, ensuring that students realize their full potential and learn in a joyful manner!
Geographical Presence and Impact
Isha Vidhya runs 9 rural schools in the districts of Coimbatore, Erode, Nagercoil, Tuticorin, Villupuram, Salem, Cuddalore and Dharmapuri in Tamil Nadu and in Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. Most of the over 5,800 children are first-generation school learners out of which 46% are girls and 57% go to school for free thanks to caring individuals, who support their schooling through our scholarship programs.
In the past two years we have dramatically increased our impact through interventions in 40 government schools in rural Tamil Nadu, which reached over 28,000 children. Through this initiative we hired and trained local teachers for teaching slow learners separately from the regular classes, introduced a new English language program and added extracurricular activities. We are excited that four such government schools in the Coimbatore district this year have reached 100% pass rates in the 10th Std. exams, for the first time in 20 years!
Will go 100% towards creating critical infrastructure like classrooms, toilets, school buses, library or labs or providing scholarships to those children most in need or sponsoring the Govt.school interventions.
For most of these children their only good meal of the day is at school. Many learn how to use a toilet and other aspects of personal hygiene only at school. The schools transform almost every aspect of a child's life & parental attitudes to education as well, while preserving and enhancing awareness of their local culture.
