Teach For India is a nationwide movement of outstanding working professionals and college graduates who teach full-time for two years in low-income and under-resourced schools, and become life-long leaders and advocates working towards equity in education. We exist because of a deep belief that every child can and must attain an excellent education. We exist to prove that no child’s demographics should determine their destiny. To us, the end of educational inequity is the freedom for all children to have the opportunity to reach their potential. And the day that all children reach their potential is the day that India reaches her potential.

We started in 2009 in just two cities and are currently impacting 40,000 students across 7 cities with 1200 Fellows who work relentlessly everyday to challenge the status quo. Increasingly we are learning more about the complexity and vastness of the problem of education inequity and we believe that no one person or an individual can solve this problem. We aspire, therefore, to drive collective action towards addressing this issue and have started working more with the communities from where our students come. Our Fellows have thus established community centers to aide our students with extra classes and extra-curricular exposure beyond school. These centers have become an after school space for our students to learn and grow and are also used to hold workshops for parents. We are also partnering with our Alumni organizations to supplement gaps such as career counseling and sports education as well as mentor school leaders and organize school management committees. We are thus trying to create an ecosystem for our students that will enable them from all angles to choose a path of their choice and be successful in the same.

”After coming to Shelf of Dreams, I was not shy and took an interesting subject, public speaking and spoke in front of many people and became confident. I learnt extra in Science and loved the classes that Bhiaya took. I learnt a lot of Math, did assignments and was interested in doing them. I did a group dance in front of many people, started liking music and also played football.”

Note by Neha, 13 years old, who comes to the community center called ‘Shelf of Dreams’ in Mandawali . The center was started by TFI Fellows in 2016.

We need your support in reaching many more students like Neha across Teach For India schools in Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad as we continue to support them from both inside and outside the school.
