On August 6th, a flash flood devastated the beautiful town of Leh and its adjoining villages. A cloudburst sent a raging sludge of water, mud and rocks down the mountain slopes destroying everything which came in its way. More than 200 people are reportedly dead and even after a month scores are missing feared buried under the 3 feet of sludge which has covered the entire area. As the relief operations continue on war footing, the main concern is to provide almost 25000 displaced people with proper homes before the harsh winter sets in 2 months time.
SEEDS with its partners set out to rehabilitate 200 families before winter. As of today we have started work on providing 50 families with a new home. The areas identified for the same are Leh, Choglamsar village and Shey village. This has been possible only because of support the people of India but a lot still needs to be done to ensure that no one is left to face the freezing cold without a home.
