Dear Friends,I work for ‘Teach for India’,and for the last eight months I have been teaching English in the 8th and the 9th grade of K.C.Thackeray Vidyaniketan, an English medium school for the less privileged in Pune. Most of my kids come from impoverished backgrounds and can't afford weekly sojourns to ‘Crossword’ and ‘Landmark’.School could be the only place they can read, learn and be inspired.It pains me to see my kids move away from the wonders of the written word due to the lack of choice and very limited access. My endeavor is to establish class room libraries and stock it with books apt for young readers, give them a choice from every genre there is and give them plenty to choose from. I want my kids to curl up to ‘Famous Five’, ’Hardy Boys’ and ‘Harry Potter’ on weekends,debate over George Orwell’s dystopia in ‘1984’ or abuse and oppression in Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mocking Bird’,walk with the hobbits and sorcerers of Tolkein’s middle earth ,shed a tear over the plight of Hosseini’s ‘Amir’ in war torn Afghanistan, marvel at Marvel’s superheroes ,be enthralled by Tintin and Asterix and be intrigued by the astuteness of Sherlock Holmes. I want my kids to experience the heady thrill of murder mysteries and courtroom dramas before their twisted forms are portrayed on the big screen.In a nutshell, I want my kids to fall in love with the enchanting and the liberating world of literature and ergo the language.You can help me spread the unparalleled joy of reading by donating generously via this portal.The receipt given by GiveIndia (as a part of their ‘India Tax Saving Challenge’) can be used to avail income tax benefits while filing returns at the end of the financial year.(For any queries call me on 09860654396 or mail me at manoj.sk2011@teachforindia.org) |
