Success Story

Sushila, age 30 is a HIV patient at Sassoon and her husband is expired with AIDs. Sushila, age 30 is a HIV patient at Sassoon and her husband is expired with AIDs. She has 3 daughters, 2 elder daughters are normal but the youngest daughter is HIV infected. Due to the social stigma attached with HIV her in laws has deserted her with daughters and also harasses her physically and mentally. She used to work as servant to meet her daily needs but lost her job when owner came to know about her illness.

Our social workers counsel HIV patients to create awareness about HIV/AIDS. They provide emotional, social support, economic support as well and run support group for HIV/AIDS patients. They disseminate information about HIV among Hospital staff, especially nurses and ward boys and sensitize positive, helpful attitudes among them by conducting workshops in the Sassoon Hospitals for this purpose. They provide medicines for patients living with HIV and Nutrition for support group for Patients Living with HIV. Sassoon referred her to SOFOSH for counseling. Our counselor empowered her to cope up with her life situation and lead a normal life. She is guided about the importance of nutrition and offered a nutritional support through our nutrition clinic and asked her to join our Support group. We helped her to raise a complaint in Family counseling center against her in-laws so that her shelter is taken care.

As 2 elder daughters are at residential schools, her financial burden is reduced. Due to counseling, she is now able to face challenges of life successfully with a smile on her face. The supportive nutrition is helping her to prevent further deterioration. She is very happy to come to the Support Group meetings due to the spirit of shared lives at such meetings not only enlivens her but gives hope for the future.
