Success Story

Mrs. Asma Shaikh is a 46-year-old widow.

Mrs. Asma Shaikh is a 46-year-old widow for whom life has been a constant fight for survival for the last few years, ever since her husband, a labourer, expired. She stays in a small hut (which has neither electricity nor water connection) with her two daughters, near the railway tracks at Kurla. The girls are small, the elder thirteen years old had her leg amputated due to a train accident. Asma is surviving day to day selling vegetable door to door in the area, making barely Rs.100/- per day. She also has to take care of her ailing mother out of her meager income.

We found Asma living in the most inhuman conditions, not even managing two square meals a day, the two children, highly under nourished. (one of her daughter died due to malnutrition) We took her up under our Ration Support programme, under this scheme she receives dry ration, which includes cereals, pulses, lentils, gram, oil, sugar etc.
The family is able to meet its basic needs, Asma is able to look after her mother’s medical needs; the two daughters are going to school, their nutritional status has improved and they can concentrate better on their studies.
