Success Story

Reena, a 20-year-old young mother, was in a desperate situation when she came to us this past July. Reena, a 20-year-old young mother, was in a desperate situation when she came to us this past July. She was terribly ill and weak with TB. Her husband had abandoned her and taken her young daughter, leaving her to care for her infant son.

The Operation ASHA counselor gave Reena hope that she would survive her condition, and counseled her on the details of treatment, transmission and prevention of TB. Throughout her six months of free treatment, the counselor supported Reena and ensured that she adhered to her medication regimen, visiting her home and giving her over-the-counter drugs when needed to counteract the side effects of the treatment. During this period, Operation ASHA also arranged to train Reena to make greeting cards and paid her Rs.10-15 on a per card basis.

Reena expressed her gratitude for Operation ASHA and the counselor, whom she calls Didi (sister): Operation ASHA was a great blessing for me. Before, people were isolating me. They would not come to my house, and I was all alone. During my treatment, Didi was very helpful – if I had any problem, she was always helping me through it. Without Operation ASHA, my life would have been very difficult. If the center were not so close to my house, I would not have been able to go every day for treatment.
