Success Story

Karpagam is a poor women living in Kadamalaikundu village in Tamilnadu Karpagam is a poor women living in Kadamalaikundu village in Tamilnadu. She had no idea about self help group functioning and what are they activities doing, so, she has no savings habit and could not avail bank loan.

LAW staff went into kadamalaikundu village in September 2009 and spoke with them about the benefits of self help groups. We met Thendral mahalir women self help groups. We held meeting where they received savings and credit management and write up resolution and various notebook maintenance training. On the second day, economic Activity for SHGs, feasibility Marketing and challenges, need for SHG federations and participation in panchayat Raj etc were covered.

Karpagam is a Thendral women SHG leader. Her group savings amount is Rs.35,000 and received a revolving fund from banks. Savings and credit activities are done periodically thereby building economic empowerment.
