Tulika Das is a little deaf girl living in Kamarkuchi village in Dimoria Block in the Kamrup district of Assam. Tulika was born profoundly deaf. She has 2 hearing sisters. Tulika Das is a little deaf girl living in Kamarkuchi village in Dimoria Block in the Kamrup district of Assam. Tulika was born profoundly deaf. She has 2 hearing sisters. A year and a half ago when the VAANI team met Tulika, she was withdrawn, and a cause of great anxiety to her family.

The community workers have been trained by the VAANI technical team on how to screen and communicate with deaf children. They were able to identify her deafness when she was a year old. With their support and the training received at the parent workshops, the family has realized that their deaf daughter can learn like her hearing sisters, and participate and feel included in social activities.

There is such a remarkable change in my daughter. I am so relieved to know that she can communicate using her own special language, sign language. The community worker taught me and I have taught all my family, so now Tulika finds it easy to communicate with all of us, said her mother when we visited her in April 2009.
