Success Story

Madhu hails from Barabanki district in Uttar Pradesh Madhu hails from Barabanki district in Uttar Pradesh. She was born in Kanchan basti slum in Nangalraya, New Delhi where she lives with her parents, one brother and three sisters. Her brother Raja and sister Barkha study in class II. Her father is a helper in a welding shop and Madhu being the eldest in the family helps in contributing to the family income by collecting iron scraps. Their family income is around Rs 2000 per month. Madhu used to study at Nangal Raya primary school in class II earlier, but owing to financial crunch she had to discontinue.

The field worker from DISHA met Madhu who spoke of her desire to study as her two siblings were studying in school. The field worker convinced her mother to allow her to spend 2 hours in the educational classes run by us. The class has a specially developed syllabus for teaching in a non-formal way.

Today, while Madhu continues to collect scraps, she takes out ample time to study and comes regularly to the class. She knows alphabets in Hindi and can count till 100. She can also do problems on addition, subtraction and multiplication. Madhu has a smiling face and she giggles before saying anything. This little girl does not like collecting scraps but she realizes her responsibilities and says that she has no options. She wants to become a doctor when she grows up.
