Success Story

Roma was brought to CINI ASHA halfway house for girls six months ago Until Roma was brought to CINI ASHA (the urban unit of CINI) halfway house for girls six months ago, she lived on the street in Dharmatala, right in the middle of Kolkata. The area bustles with people from early in the morning till late in the night. The heart of the city never ceases to throb. Which means that little Roma never gets to play as she lives in a concrete jungle without seeing any greenery.

For the children who live on the streets of Kolkata, playing is a luxury they grow up without. Either they spend the day doing backbreaking work, or look after their siblings and wander the streets, often falling prey to physical, sexual, and mental abuse. It is for children like Roma that CINI thought of Monobitan. Monobitan is a Recreation Center cum Nature Park with beautiful milieu provides deprived children recreation and amusement to go back to their world of innocence and simplicity. It is spread over five acres, about half of which is yet to be developed. The developed half of the premises contains a play area, an open-air theatre, a dormitory-cum-hall for children and nine rooms for adults. The dormitory can accommodate about 50 children and the rooms about 36 adults with canteen facilities. Hence, a trip to Monobitan is almost a pilgrimage to these deprived children.

The flowers are so beautiful and there are so many of them. But what I like most about this place is that theres so much space, gushes Roma. This place is Monobitan, a fun and play park on the outskirts of Kolkata, created by Child in Need Institute (CINI) for street children. This is her first time at Monobitan, and though she fell sick during the one-hour bus ride from the city, is now visibly excited! At first, she sticks to the other children and tries out the swing and ropeway. But the green grass ultimately is too tempting, and she runs across the lawn. I like to run fast, very fast, she says. I cannot do this in my para (neighbourhood). During the ride back, they forced uncle (their caretaker) to tell them when they would get to visit again. They vow that they will all be good if he promises to get them back soon.
