Success Story

Melghat is known for very high rate of malnutrition and children deaths. Melghat is known for very high rate of malnutrition and children deaths. More than 75% of under 5 children are malnourished and 10% were severely malnourished. The major causes are poverty, ignorance of health and nutrition, lack of proper farming methods and proper food, superstitions.etc. Government failed to reduce the malnutrition to significant extent.

We selected 19 local semi literate tribal female as village health workers (VHW). We trained them intensively on nutrition education. We trained VHW and villagers for proper child care and nutritious food production on available piece of land. We trained them low cost sustainable organic way of farming. We developed 150 kitchen gardens or nutrition farms in 18 villages of Melghat.

Due to nutrition education and nutrition farm, many of the tribals changed their way of life in the form of proper child care and proper farming. They are using drainage water for kitchen garden. Due to which, the prevalence of severe malnutrition has been reduced by 50% in 16 villages of Melghat. Many deaths of Malnutrition were prevented. This year 500 families are ready for nutrition farm.
