Success Story

Shivaji Dike, a small farmer having 4 acres of land was at the point of committing suicide as he had to face total poverty due to debts Shivaji Dike, a small farmer having 4 acres of land was at the point of committing suicide as he had to face total poverty due to debts. He borrowed money for pesticides and chemical fertilizers which he was not able to pay back due to loss in mono crop production (Cotton). Moreover soil has become very hard and unproductive due to severe use of chemical fertilizers. The water table also became low due to intensive use of water. He stopped farming in his own farm and stated working in big farms as an agriculture labourer.

MGVS organized farmers awareness programmes in the villages and sensitized them about the ill effects of chemical faming and the need of organic farming as a hope for small farmers. 5 days training programmes were arranged for the farmers in which they were taught the principles of organic agriculture and systems, different methods of organic composting and organic methods of pest control to reduce the production rate. They were taught to use and preserve the traditional seeds. Shivaji Dike was an active participant in the training programme. He was totally convinced of the benefits of organic farming

Shivaji Dike started practicing organic farming in his own farm. He prepared vermin compost in his own farm. He started practicing crop rotation and mixed crop pattern through which he could crop diversity and good production. He exchanged traditional seeds with other farmers. Though he did not get much profit in the first yew years he did not have a loss as his production cost came down. Now he has become a confident and happy organic farmer who is free from debts. He has a dairy of his own and a unit of biogas slurry. He also uses biogas slurry for composting through which he gets good result. His farm has been utilized as a demonstration farm for other farmers to learn and have practicals
