Success Story

8-year old Ataur lived with his parents, a brother and a sister. 8-year old Ataur lived with his parents, a brother and a sister. He was suffering from a congenital condition called Vasculitis, an auto-immune disease affecting peripheral blood vessels. Blood vessels get inflamed and blocked, preventing proper blood flow resulting in gangrene of the extremities and ulceration of the skin at various places. It started as rashes all over the body, when he was 6½ years old. After a year of curative treatment, the doctor referred him to Dean Foundation for Palliative Care.

The Dean Foundation team consisting of a doctor, nurse and volunteer visited him, took his medical history and examined him. He was bedridden with severe pain on the slightest movement. His lower limbs were swollen. His skin had become black in several places and formed ulcers which caused him severe pain. Due to his painful condition his mother was hesitant to give him a bath or even clean the scabs off his body. After giving him pain killers the ulcers were cleaned and dressed.

Initially, we visited him every alternate day till his condition stabilized. The pain killers and other medicines that were administered helped control his pain and symptoms. He and his caregivers were counseled to face the stressful situation. Ataur was in our care for 10 months before he passed away.
