Success Story

Kamalamma, aged 60 is a hearing impaired widow Kamalamma, aged 60 is a hearing impaired widow. She used to work for daily wages in the fields near her house. She stays with the family of her elder son, a daily wage earner. A year back, Kamalamma noticed a lump in her left breast. She was admitted for 3 months in Chennai General hospital (intermittent) during which time tests were done. She was diagnosed with Cancer breast and advised chemotherapy. She was unhappy with the treatment suggested and left the hospital without getting discharged. After 4 months, she noticed a lump in her right breast, which ulcerated. Her left hand started swelling due to lymph edema. She took Homeopathy medicines locally and felt some relief. She was then referred to Dean Foundation by a neighbor.

Dean Foundation Palliative Care Team consisting of doctor, nurse volunteer and driver visited the family. She was in severe pain, at the slightest movement, and had to be given an injection of morphine before her case history was taken and a detailed examination done. Her BP and respiration were normal. She had had no sleep at all for few weeks and was extremely tired. The injection relieved her of pain. The infected ulcer was cleaned and dressed. It had not been cleaned as the family feared infection. The family was advised that cancer was not infectious. The team gave medicines for sleeplessness, vomiting and constipation.

With pain management and other medications, her distressing symptoms have been brought under control and her condition is stable at present. She has been under our care for the past 4 months.
