Success Story

Vijaya, age 49 years, was a tailor. Vijaya, age 49 years, was a tailor. Her husband was a leprosy-healed patient but blind and was therefore unable to care for his family. Her family of 7 stay in a rented apartment. In June 2004, she noticed a white discharge. After a while she went for a checkup in a govt. hospital. Tests were done and she was diagnosed with cancer of the uterus. She was given radiation and seemed to be okay for a while. She returned to work and went regularly for monthly check ups till July 2005. Then she started bleeding accompanied by severe pain. On consultation at a cancer hospital she was told that there was no hope for cure. By Feb 2006, she had severe back pain and knee pain. She was started on pain medication at the cancer hospital and sent home.

On her first visit to the Out-Patient clinic, pain medication was increased and she was given instructions on hygiene. After two visits she was unable to come to the clinic. The family had to work to sustain her and there was no one at home to look after her. The Dean Foundation team visited her at home and found that she had become anemic due to severe blood loss. She had palpitations, allergy and breathlessness on movement because her hemoglobin was as low as 6 gm. It was absolutely necessary to give her 2 units of blood and she was brought to Dean for transfusion. The family was unable to pay for the same but it was provided with donations collected for the purpose.

Her condition improved and her symptoms became less for a month. Gradually, the disease took its toll on her and her situation worsened. She had severe pain and leg swelling for which medications were given to keep her comfortable. Three months later she passed away. She was under Dean Foundation care for over a year.
