Success Story

Magesh, 35 years, was working as a coolie at Kancheepuram Magesh, 35 years, was working as a coolie at Kancheepuram till he was diagnosed with cancer of the penis. He has a wife and 3 school-going children. He shifted to Chennai, for treatment. It all started with difficulty in passing urine. A circumcision operation was done after which he freely passed urine. 6 months later, metastasis of the cancer developed as a swelling in the left groin and began to grow rapidly. It became ulcerated and non-healing. In spite of chemotherapy, he had severe pain and swelling. The ulcer bled, especially on standing. Radiotherapy was not advised due to fear of aggravating the ulceration.

On examination by the Palliative Care team, consisting of doctor, nurse and volunteer, it was found is that the skin had necrosis (dead). Fever and secondary infection was treated with antibiotics and pain with morphine and other analgesics. Medication was dispensed for bleeding and edema as well. The patient did not allow the team to clean and dress his wounds fearing extreme pain, at the first visit. The nutrition supplied by us helped the patient to withstand the medicines and fight the disease.

Patient started eating and sleeping well and his general condition improved. The disease gradually took its toll on him and his left leg developed severe swelling and multiple non-healing ulcers, which had to be cleaned and dressed regularly as also his bed sores. His wife, a daily wage earner, had to stop working to take care of him. The family was supported in their pitiful plight with linen, cash (for education of children) and essentials such as nutrition, provisions, etc. Magesh was under our care for about 6 months.
