Success Story

Mumtaj is a 12 yr old totally blind child residing at village Baruwar in Agra district of U. P.

Mumtaj is a 12 yr old totally blind child residing at village Baruwar in Agra district of U. P. Her father passed away when she was a small child and thus her family comprising of her mother , 4 sisters and 2 brothers were lonely. Out of the 6 chilren , 5 of them ( 3 daughters and 2 brothers ) are blind since birth. Mumtaj was a girl with a sweet looking eyes but sightless. The family was living in extremely poor conditions in a dilapidated structure having a couple of rooms. The family had no income source and all the blind children were subject to poor nourishment and neglect.

She was identified by us 4 years ago at that time non of the blind children were in school. We used to encourage parents, counselled them to admit blind children in schools. Mumtaj was admitted in a government school. The remaining 2 children were already overage. Our I.E. teacher started visiting the family on a regular basis. She started learning the specials skills such as braille , orientation and mobility , activities of daily living , use of special devices etc. She also started attending school regularly. She was given a Braille Kit which forms an essential part of her education. In addition , considering that the family was very poor ,we also offered Mumtaj and her two blind siblings sponsorship assistance to cover personal needs – such as footwear , supplementary nutrition , stationery etc.
Mumtaj in now in class VI. She has been standing first inher class in the last two academic years. She has learnt braille and can read about 25 to 30 words per minute. We have also introduced english braille and english world building thru antakshari is one of ther favourite hobbies. She is well conversant with the use of the taylor’s arithmetic frame. She is well conversant and can move independently both in and around the home and the school. There is no doubt that she has a bright academic future ahead of her despite beig blind and belonging to a poor socio economic and educational background.
