Success Story

Rare fruit yielding & medicinal plant species were affected due to habitat fragmentation. Rare fruit yielding & medicinal plant species were affected due to habitat fragmentation. When TRDC started an inventory programme of wild tropical fruit trees & shrub species in the fringes of Western Ghats and Eastern plains, few community members said that all wild tropical fruits have been cut in the last 3 decades & they have started feeling the food security problem due to this deterioration.

We helped village communities in locating, collecting and evaluating existing biodiversity with special emphasis on identification & propagation of wild tropical fruits trees and medicinal plant species through decentralized nurseries. Also, we promoted the use of improved fruit diversity in local communities and develop market linkages for the local tropical fruit trees and medicinal plants

Communities have realized the importance of tropical fruits for their own food security & for wild life. Enrichment planting has started in Uttara Kannada District & in other parts of Karnataka. This has also lead to greater awareness among the forest department on the need for conservation of wild tropical & less known fruits and medicinal plants. Research & documentation has also increased greatly. Children in the photo are from Naroor village who have started showing active interest in planting wild tropical fruit trees for future generations, reverse climate change and to save life on the planet.
