Success Story

Janaki Raju (aged 13 at that time) was found in 2006

Janaki Raju (aged 13 at that time) was found in 2006 by one of the trustees of Salaam Baalak Trust near Eros Cinema in Mumbai. She was staying on the streets of Mumbai. She was suffering from malnutrition and was obviously very ill

The trustee took her to the centre at Salaam Baalak Trust. Social workers tried to find her family. On learning she was an orphan and living with extended family, she was admitted to Salaam Baalak Trust’s Night Shelter for girls at Umerkhadi. Janaki is a slow learner and suffered from scabies/other health disorders when she was admitted to the shelter
After almost a year, she has put on weight and personal hygiene has improved remarkably with supervision.. She mingles well with the other girls at the shelter and is enrolled at Dongri Municipal School where her progress will be monitored. She takes part in physical activities at the centre including learning Judo. The change in her from an undernourished, sick girl of the streets to a normal, happy and healthy child is a noticeable one
