Success Story

When 9 year old Meena’s parents died in 2005 within a span of a couple months, she and her brother went to stay with their grandmother. When 9 year old Meena’s parents died in 2005 within a span of a couple months, she and her brother went to stay with their grandmother. However by August of 2006, both children were abandoned in front of a temple in Maharashtra, and after being tested as HIV positive, were taken in by Naz. Meena had settled into Naz quite well, and was excelling in her studies, when one day in September of 2007 she became unconscious at school.

Meena was rushed to the hospital for further investigations. Given the urgency of the situation, her tests were conducted at private hospitals. Neurologists looked at CT scans, EEGs, and contrast MRIs, in order to diagnose Meena’s condition. She was put on medication to control her convulsions and kept under close medical supervision. By December, she was diagnosed with PML (Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy), a rare viral brain disorder that occurs almost exclusively in people with severe immune deficiency. Though PML is often fatal, Meena’s will to live fought against the grim prognosis given by her doctors.

Meena continues to struggle with her health. Though she had to miss an academic year due to her illness, she has been enrolled in a special school once again and is adjusting well. She is very proud of the progress she has made, and can now sit up on her own and eat without assistance. Though she gets frustrated during her physiotherapy sessions, she continues to work hard and shows astounding courage.
