Success Story

Cataract, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, refractive error, etc are common ailments which often lead to vision loss if untreated. Cataract, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, refractive error, etc are common ailments which often lead to vision loss if untreated. Low literacy levels, inability to afford the cost of operation as well as lack of access to specialized medical treatment available mostly in urban centres. This has resulted in rampant prevalence of blindness amongst the elderly rural poor.

SAPNA with the assistance of Venu Eye Hospital,Delhi holds one mobile eye camp on second Friday of every month spread in rural areas of Alwar district. Out of an OPD of around 200-250, around 30 patients are culled out for cataract operations at Venu Eye Hospital in Delhi. After operations they are sent back home on the 3rd day. Spectacles and medicines are dispensed free of cost.

There has been tremendous response in these eye camps. Around 30 camps have been organized and more than 1000 patients have been operated for cataract since the start of the campaign in August 2007. Encouraged by the response, the Venu Eye Hospital has opened a Vision Centre at Vijay Mandir, Alwar (Main Centre of SAPNA) which provides for preliminary eye checkups and follow ups.
