Success Story

15 year old Vikas goes to a government school in south Delhi, separated from his parents who live hundreds of miles away in a remote village.

15 year old Vikas goes to a government school in south Delhi, separated from his parents who live hundreds of miles away in a remote village. He and his brother were alone in the city and in need of somewhere cheap to live, so that they could continue schooling. Vikas’s dream was to work in tourism, and he was desperate not to have to give up school in order to work; he had a contact at the Lotus Temple who could get him a free room and food if he volunteered as a guide - if only his English was good enough!

Vikas had enrolled in some programs with international NGO partnership CASP-Plan, and in 2009 was keen to join batch 10 of CES (Confidence in Spoken English) the program designed and delivered by ETASHA for CASP Plan in Badarpur. He had heard about the program from previous trainees. Vikas joined the program which provides intensive English language training using innovative methodology. This included visits and work on grooming and etiquette.
3 months into the CES program, Vikas finally got beds in the dorm at the Lotus Temple, for both he and his brother. The Bahai Place of Worship, or Lotus Temple as it is better known locally, is famous throughout Delhi and the world. For 15 year old Vikas Dubey it is now also home. Every day after school Vikas and his younger brother make their way to the dorm room they share with several other boys, and change out of their school uniforms and into their own clothes and to begin the next part of their day. For Vikas, his brother Varun and their roommates all receive free board and basic meals in return for acting as guides around the famous tourist site. If tourists tip them, then even better for the boys! But this is just a short term measure, allowing him to live, eat and work so that he can continue his studies and go on to study tourism.
