Success Story

Arun was working as a construction worker in Chennai Arun was working as a construction worker in Chennai. He was a short, but physically very strong probably due to years of lifting heavy construction material. His mother, Maheswari, expected Arun, the oldest of four children to work and to supplement the family income. When he was 10 years old he came to Ananya where his brother and sister were studying. That was the turning point in his life

At Ananya, we realized that he was a good mechanic, a brilliant Hockey and Chess player. Academically, he is good at memorizing, has strong reasoning skills but lacks communication skills, oral or written. After a few years of basic literacy inputs we gave him an opportunity to build on his skills and interests and sent him for Hockey coaching and for an automobile mechanics training course

In the 9 years at Ananya, he has won many in-house chess championships, captained the Hockey team, won accolades and has successfully completed his School Leaving Examination. He is learning driving and hopes to work as a driver or mechanic in future. At home, he has learnt to negotiate with his mother, and has supported his sister when she was under pressure to get married at 13 years
