Joining Payroll Giving

Top
  • Why do I need to register with GiveIndia before making a donation?
    • Only employees of companies that have already registered with GiveIndia are eligible to join the Payroll Giving programme. See that list of companies.
  • How do I join the GiveIndia Payroll Giving Programme?
    • Please click here to get started.

  • Why do I need to register with GiveIndia before making a donation?
    • Registration is mandatory on GiveIndia for a number of reasons:

      1. We need to capture your contact information to send you donation receipts and feedback reports.

      2. The Government of India regulations stipulate that every NGO that seeks funding from any person who is not an Indian national, must possess an FCRA certificate. That's why we ask you to choose a person category based on your nationality and country of residence.

      3. The Government of India requires us to keep track of the full address of each donor

      4. Please be assured that GiveIndia will not use your personal details for any other purpose.

      5. Please click here to begin your registration process.

  • What email address should I use for my username on GiveIndia.org?
    • Please be sure to use an email ID that you use often when you register at GiveIndia.org as all communication will be sent to this ID.

In case you're using your work email address when you register, then please remember to change it before you you leave your company. You will not be able to change your username if you do not have access to your old email. You can change your user ID on GiveIndia by updating your profile. Simply log into the GiveIndia site, go to 'My Profile' and update the e-mail ID field.

  • I have signed up for Payroll Giving but I have not received my password. When will I receive it?
    • If you have not received your password within 14 days of your signing up, please mail us at info@giveindia.org giving us your employee ID number, your company name and the email address that you used when signing up.
  • I lost my password. What do I do now?
    • Please visit GiveIndia.org and click on 'Forgot Your Password?' under the log in box on the left. A new password will be sent to your email ID. When you log in with your new password, please take a minute and change it to one that you can easily remember.

  • GiveIndia sent me a password. Can I change it.
    • Yes! Please do change it to something you can remember and be doubly sure by storing your new password in a secure location. To change it, you need to first log in and then click on 'Change Password'.

Remember that your password is case sensitive.

  • I tried to log in but I got a message that says that my account is locked. What do I do now?
    • Your account has been locked for security reasons because the wrong password was entered three times while attempting to log in. Please check your mailbox for an automatically generated message from GiveIndia that provides detailed instructions on how you can unlock your account. If you can't find the email, please first check your spam folders, then write to info@giveindia.org for more help.
  • I don't seem to be getting messages from GiveIndia. What could the problem be?
    • Several mail services like Yahoo, Hotmail and Gmail have spam filters in place. Be sure to add the email address info@giveindia.org to your address book so you keep receiving important mails about your account.
  • What are My Account and My Payroll?
    • My Account is where you can see how much money is accumulating from your deductions and the donations you make from it as well as other details, such as your employee ID, department, location or company. You can also see your last transactions. My Payroll is where you can go to make changes in the amount you deduct.
  • What is the minimum amount to enroll in the Payroll Giving programme?
    • You can participate in the Payroll Giving programme for as little as Rs50 per month. However, since the minimum accumulated amount needed for most donations is Rs500, a larger deduction will help money accumulate faster so you make a donation sooner.

Deducting

Top
  • What is the difference between deducting and donating?
    • A deduction is a fixed sum chosen by you being deducted from your salary every month and put into an account for you at GiveIndia.org. Donating is when you log into GiveIndia.org and find a cause and donation option of your choice and donate a sum of money from your account towards that.
  • How long does it take for the money deducted from my salary to be reflected in my Charity Account??
    • It usually takes between 15 to 45 days for money deducted from your salary to be reflected in your Charity Account. This period varies depending on how quickly we receive information from your company about the deduction amounts of all employees. Some companies provide this information more quickly than others. After we receive the information on the employee deductions, it takes us no more than two to three working days to credit the money to your Charity Account.
  • How do I change my monthly deduction amount in the Payroll Giving programme?
    • n order to change your monthly deduction:

Step 1: Log into GiveIndia.org with your User ID (your email address) and password. Use the same email address that you entered in your sign up form. If you have forgotten your password, click 'Forgot Your Password?', and your password will be emailed to you.

      Step 2: Click 'My Payroll'.

Step 3: Change the amount in the 'Monthly Payroll Deductible Amount Rs.' field.

Step 4: You will get an email confirming your instruction.

  • I have signed up for payroll giving and every month an amount is being deducted from my salary. However, I received a receipt for Rs.0 (nil); why is that?
    • You will receive a receipt for Rs.0 (nil) as your monthly deductions are uploaded in your charity account by GiveIndia. This receipt cannot be used for tax purposes.

As you make a donation from the accumulated monthly deductions lying in your charity account at GiveIndia, you will receive another receipt. This receipt can be used for tax purposes.
  • My company is matching my deductions? How will this work when I make a donation?
    • n such a case, when you make a donation, your company's contribution is first taken into consideration and then your individual contribution (subject to the total donation amount). Your company will get a receipt for its contribution and you separately for your individual contribution.

For example, if over five months you deducted Rs200 totalling Rs1,000 and your company did the same, you would have a total of Rs2000 in your account. If you made a donation of Rs1000, the receipt for the Rs1000 would go to the company. Then if you made two donations of Rs500 each, you would get the receipts for those donations.

  • I checked my account balance and it was incorrect. What should I do?
    • Every month we send a statement to your company with the amounts to be deducted from your pay. Your company then sends us the money along with a statement explaining the differences due to employees who have left in the previous month. Your company may sometimes delay sending us the payment or the explanation and this prevents us from uploading credits into your GiveIndia account. Normally, credits are uploaded within a week of receiving both the money and the explanation.

Please write to info@giveindia.org if you think your balance is incorrect or if you think it does not match what you think it should be.

  • How do I discontinue my monthly deductions?
    • Remember to donate your accumulated account balance before leaving the programme.

      To discontinue your monthly contribution:

Step 1: Log into GiveIndia.org with your User ID (your email address) and password. Use the same email address that you entered in your sign-up form. If you have forgotten your password, click 'Forgot Password' and your password will be emailed to you.

Step 2: Click on 'My Payroll'.

Step 3: Click on 'Disable' next to 'Payroll Status' at the bottom of the page.

Step 4: You will receive an email confirming your instruction.

We hope to see you back on the programme as soon as possible. To get back on the programme, follow the same steps above, clicking 'Enable' next to Payroll Status.

  • Can I withdraw my account balance?.
    • Yes. Please write to info@giveindia.org with your mailing address and amount to be refunded. We will send a cheque to your address within 2-3 weeks of receiving your request.

    • Yog-in with your Used ID and password to GiveIndia.org and click on 'My Account'. You'll see:

      * Account Status

      * Balance as on (date) is INR (amount).

Remember, in most cases you need as little as Rs500 in your account to make a donation.

  • What needs to be the minimum balance in my account so I can make a donation?
    • The minimum amount for any donation option is Rs500. You can browse through donation options by clicking on any of the causes shown on the left sidebar. Or by clicking on 'Search' at the top, right-hand corner of any site page and filling in your search criteria. Only in the case of iGive pages can you donate even lower amounts.
  • How do I choose a cause to donate to?
    • Click on the cause closest to your heart from the 10 options on the left of your screen. You can browse the different donation options and pick one that fits your desires as well as your budget. You can also search for the right donation option using the 'Search' link on the top right hand corner of every page if you like.

Remember: GiveIndia cannot choose for you. You must make a donation to a cause of your choice from your GiveIndia account.

  • Before I make a donation, I want more information detailed information about the NGOs. Where do I find this?
    • You can click on 'List of Certified NGOs' that appears on the left side bar. Clicking on any of the NGO names will take you to their profile page where you can browse their:

      - Organisation Profile

      - Financials

      - Donation Options

      - Stories of Hope

      - Governance

      - Contact Information

  • Every NGO has a Corpus Fund and a General Fund. What do these donation options mean?
    • To be sustainable, NGOs need to build up a strong organisation. Given the erratic nature of funding, developing a corpus/general fund is one way that NGOs can do this. When you donate to the corpus/general fund, this helps NGOs to design long-term programmes without worrying about programme support from aid agencies, and to meet organisational costs that no one else is willing to bear.

Essentially corpus/general fund donations are not earmarked for a specific purpose, and the NGO is thus free to use them as required [e.g., to meet fundraising costs, to conduct a training programme to upgrade skills of its own staff, or to launch a new project, etc.]

Funds in the general fund can be used at any time, whereas money in a corpus can normally not be touched - the organisation is supposed to use only the interest that accrues from investments made out of corpus donations, without touching the principal itself.

  • What tax benefits will I get for my donations through GiveIndia?
    • Donors can avail of the following tax benefits -

      For Indian Tax Payers:

Under scheme 80G of the IT Act up to 50% of your donation is deductible.

Under scheme 35AC of the IT Act, 100% of your donation is deductible from your income. This applies only to specified projects and is an advanced search tax scheme.

Under scheme 35(i)(ii) of the IT Act (only specified projects), 125% of your donation is deductible from your business income, and 100% of your donation is deductible from salary income. This scheme also applies to specified projects only.

Payroll Giving currently doesn't offer tax benefits in the U.S. or U.K.

  • My account balance is less than my chosen donation option. Can I pay the rest through credit card?
    • Yes, you can supplement the amount in your account by using your credit card, or through ICICI Net Banking, or through a cheque. After the amount is credited in your charity account, you can pay for your selected donation option through 'My Account'.
  • I've heard of Gift a Donation. How does it work?
    • You can gift a donation to a dear friend or relative on special occasions, instead of giving them flowers or other gifts. When you 'gift a donation' to a friend/ relative, you continue to get the receipt and tax deduction, but a message is sent to your friend/ relative, indicating that you have gifted a donation on his/her behalf. Both you and your friend are sent the feedback report on how the donation made a difference.

Here is a step-by-step instruction on how you can gift a donation:

Step 1: If you are already registered on GiveIndia, log into the site with your email ID and password. (click on 'Forgot Your Password?' incase you do not remember your password, and a new one will be emailed to you, which you can use to log into the site). If you are new to GiveIndia, register with us.

Step 2: Select your favourite cause / NGO and find a donation option that you would like to support. Tick the 'Gift this Donation' box, then click on 'Proceed to Donate'.

Step 3: You will be asked to fill in the recipient of the gift's name and email ID; along with a message that you would like to send him/her.

Step 4: Once done, you will be taken to your Donation Cart page. Click on the 'Checkout Now' button to proceed to pay for your gift.

    After you donate

    Top
    • I've made a donation. When will I get my receipt?
      • If you made a donation that is eligible for tax benefit 80G via credit card/Internet banking or from your account, a receipt is immediately emailed to you. Please check your email once you complete making your donation. The receipt can also be accessed by logging into GiveIndia.org and clicking on 'My Donation History'.

The only exception is that if you have made a donation that is eligible for tax benefit 35AC, a receipt will be posted to you directly from the NGO. This procedure will take approximately 60 days.

    • I have made a donation so why haven't I received my receipt?
      • * If you have made a donation that is eligible for tax benefit 35AC, a receipt will be posted to you directly from the NGO. This procedure will take 60 days.

        * If you made an account deposit, then no receipt will be issued. Receipts for these sums will be issued when you donate the money from your account balance.

        * If you made a donation that is eligible for tax benefit 80G via credit card/Internet banking or from your account, a receipt is immediately emailed to you. Please check your email once you complete making your donation. The receipt can also be accessed by logging into GiveIndia.org and clicking on 'My Donation History'.

    • I've lost my receipt. What do I do now?
      • In case you have misplaced your receipt, you may print out another one by logging into GiveIndia.org and clicking on 'My Donation History'. Click on the receipt that you have lost and save a copy on your computer.
    • There is a mismatch between the donation amount made by me and the amount on the receipt. What do I do?
      • There will be a mismatch between the donation amount made by you and the amount on the receipt only if you are registered under the Payroll Giving programme and if your company also contributes to your GiveIndia account. In such a case, you receive a receipt for your individual contribution; and your company receives a separate receipt for its contribution. Your receipt shows your individual contribution and also details of the total amount of the donation option selected by you.
    • Why did I get a receipt for Rs.0 (Nil)?
      • You'd get a receipt for Rs.0 (Nil) if your company also contributes to your GiveIndia account. In such a case, when you make a donation, your company's contribution is first taken into consideration and then your individual contribution (subject to the total donation amount). When your company's contribution alone covers your selected donation option, you get a receipt for Rs.0 (and your company gets a receipt for its contribution).
    • I would like a copy of the Sec.80G certificate. Where can I find it?
      • GiveIndia provides the 80G number on the receipt itself, in keeping with Income Tax Department rules. You do not need a copy of the 80G certificate to claim your deduction. However, for your own reassurance, you can download a copy of our 80G certificate
    • How long does it take for my donation to reach the NGO?
      • After you donate online, it may take around 24-72 hours for your payment to be approved. GiveIndia disburses the donations of a particular month on the 10th of the next month. This is applicable for donations made in India. For those in the US/UK, donations made by the 15th of the month are disbursed to the NGO on the 10th of the next month. The extra time required is due to high lead time in bank transfers and remittance procedures from US/UK to India.

Please visit the iGive Help Centre to learn about the disbursal of funds for iGive pages.
    • Tell me more about the GiveIndia feedback report I will receive after making an online donation?
      • Typically feedback reports** are emailed to donors within eight months after receipt of the donation. In the details for each donation option on GiveIndia.org, we provide information on what feedback will be provided for that donation option.

**The only exceptions are the marathon, during which we list NGOs chosen by runners, and hence do not provide feedbacks for donations to these NGOs; and in the case of iGive projects that are not certified by us and are put up directly by the page owners.

    • What type of feedback report do I get when I make a Corpus Fund donation?
      • To be sustainable in the long run, all NGOs maintain a Corpus Fund. Usually the interest (that accrues on this amount) but sometimes the principal amount itself is used as and when the NGO deems necessary. Possible purposes of utilisation of this fund are decided at the beginning of every financial year as per the NGO's corpus fund policy. These include funding of projects, payment of staff salaries, contingencies etc. This information is submitted to us and is readily available to share with donors who contribute towards an NGO's corpus fund which is why donors receive a Corpus Fund feedback immediately.

Every individual donation made towards an NGO's corpus fund collects in this account and the accumulated amount is eventually utilised for a specific purpose. That's why every donation made towards an NGO's corpus fund receives the same feedback.

    • Can I write to or visit the beneficiary in my feedback report?
      • Your NGOs typically do welcome visitors, though they may have preferred timings so that they can facilitate visits. GiveIndia encourages donors to contact the NGOs directly and set up meetings at their convenience. Most NGOs do not allow donors to visit the specific beneficiaries that they have supported or sponsored, as it can often give rise to awkward situations for the beneficiary. However, they would typically allow donors and visitors to meet with and talk to their beneficiary communities in general.

GiveIndia itself conducts random verification visits to ensure that beneficiaries do exist. If there is a group of donors (at least five) from a specific company or group that would like to visit an NGO, GiveIndia would be happy to talk to the NGO, connect a representative from the group with the NGO representative and facilitate a visit. The donors will need to make their own travel and other arrangements. Please ensure that the visit guidelines and timings of the NGO are adhered to in such cases.

    • I'd like to see a list of all the companies that are currently registered for the Payroll Giving programme?
      • Please click here to see the list of all companies that are currently registered for the Payroll Giving programme'.
    • I am leaving my current employer? What do I do about my Payroll Giving Account?
      • If your user name on GiveIndia is your personal email address, that will remain valid; then simply log into the site, go to 'My Payroll' and change the company name to your new company. If your new company is not registered, please disable your payroll status and send us a mail with your new company's contact information. We will try and get them signed on to the programme.

If you are registered with your company email address, please donate your entire account balance and then disable your account. You can register afresh with a personal email address if your new company is part of the programme.

    • How much money does GiveIndia earn from the interest of accumulated payroll giving accounts?
      • This amount is much less than most donors think it will be. Read on

Assuming a user donates Rs100 per month and the bank provides standard 3.5% on "quarterly minimum balance", the total interest we earn on a person who has an account balance of Rs1,200 is Rs19, or 1.6% p.a. effectively.

On an overall outstanding balance of, say, Rs1 crore, that comes to Rs1.6 lacs in interest. Given that a large amount of donors don't accumulate money for that long, roughly 60+% of PRG contributions by value are donated regularly. Thus, as against roughly Rs9-10 lacs in fees that we would have billed per crore deducted, only Rs40 lacs would have earned interest @ 1.6%, i.e., we would earn Rs64,000 p.a. in interest per crore deducted.

Thus, Net Effective Interest Earned on Payroll Giving donations is roughly 0.64% p.a., or Rs64,000 per Rs1 crore.

    • Can GiveIndia send me a receipt by post or courier?
      • We normally do not send certificates by post or courier, to keep our overheads low and to ensure that the maximum amount of money can reach the NGOs you are supporting. A printed copy of the PDF receipt is adequate for your tax returns and for claiming a deduction, since it carries the transaction details and our 80G registration number.

    About GiveIndia

    Top
    • What is GiveIndia?
      • GiveIndia is a professionally governed and managed Indian nonprofit organisation dedicated to promote a "giving culture" in India. Our mission is to promote efficient and effective giving that provides opportunities for the underprivileged in India.
    • How is GiveIndia different from other NGOs?
      • Here are some of the things that make us unique:

        1. We do not raise funds for ourselves, but offer you the chance to donate to any of a wide range of NGOs that have cleared specific norms of credibility and accountability.

        2. We work hard to keep our cost of fundraising down to a single digit - 9.1%. Most other funding intermediary organisations spend between 20-50% on fundraising.

        3. Only we offer you a wide range of 300+ 'donation options' from 100+ NGOs working on 10 causes.

        4. GiveIndia provides you with in-depth details of NGOs listed with us.

        5. GiveIndia sends you a feedback report on every donation**you make. This feedback contains details about the beneficiary and that lets you know how your money has made a difference.

** Except for the Marathon, during which we list NGOs chosen by runners, and hence do not provide feedbacks for donations to these NGOs and in the case of iGive projects that are not certified by us and are put up directly by the page owners.

    • Who manages GiveIndia?
      • GiveIndia is owned and managed by GIVE Foundation, a nonprofit organisation dedicated to raising funds for good NGOs in India.

GIVE Foundation was set up by Venkat Krishnan, an IIM-A graduate who previously worked with the Times Group and Sony TV. The Board of Directors includes:

        1. Mr. N. Vaghul - Chairman - ICICI Bank

        2. Mr. Amit Chandra - Managing Director, Bain Capital Advisors

        4. Mr. Tarun Das - Chief Mentor - CII

        5. Mr. Kishore Chaukar - President, Tata Industries

        6. Ms. Rama Bijapurkar - Strategy Consultant

    • What do you mean by a GiveIndia certified NGO?
      • A GiveIndia certified NGO has cleared stringent norms of credibility and accountability. We have a thorough, transparent and objective selection process for the NGOs profiled on our site.

Here are some of the criteria we use for selection:

        * Organisations must be registered non-profits that implement social development projects in India, with no political affiliations.

        * At least 50% of their beneficiaries must be economically underprivileged.

        * Organisations must be unbiased in their beneficiary selection i.e. non religious / non political.

        * The organisation should meet the Credibility Alliance's norms or be willing to meet them within 6 months of listing on our site.

        * The organisation must be willing to create donation options and provide prompt feedback for the donations.

    • How much of my donation reaches the NGO I select?
      • Your company pays GiveIndia a donation to operate the Payroll Giving programme for them. This means 100% of your donation reaches the NGO you choose.

    • Why should I donate through GiveIndia?
      • There are 6 reasons why you should donate with us:

        1. GiveIndia gives you complete flexibility on choosing not just the NGO or the cause you wish to contribute to, but also the impact you would like to create.

        2. GiveIndia coordinates with its partners to give you a detailed feedback on how your money is used ensuring complete transparency. **

        3. To ensure that your money reaches the right people and is utilised appropriately, GiveIndia requires certified NGOs to meet the Credibility Alliance Norms. Every listed organisation is scrutinised for accountability and transparency before being taken on board. **

        4. Your contributions to GiveIndia will receive tax deductions provided by u/s 80G of the Indian Income Tax Act.

        5. GiveIndia is run by professionals from the corporate sector who have chosen to help the less fortunate.

** Except for the marathon, during which we list NGOs chosen by runners, and hence do not provide feedbacks for donations to these NGOs; and in the case of iGive projects that are not certified by us and are put up directly by the page owners.
