Success Story

Ramchand was 38 years old and a caterer by profession. Ramchand was 38 years old and a caterer by profession. His wife was unemployed and children were studying. One day, he noticed a swelling in the right side of the neck. The biopsy was negative for cancer. An ulcer developed in the neck, which gradually became very large and infected. It was then diagnosed as cancer and 34 fractions of radiation were given. Gradually, he found it difficult to open his mouth to take in semisolids or even fluids. Surgically, a tube was inserted in the stomach to feed him. He became extremely lean, weak and anemic. The ulcer on the right upper part of the neck (size of 2 ½" x ¾") became highly infected and foul smelling. He had sleeplessness, cough and extreme tiredness.

A year later, he was referred to Dean Foundation. The Palliative Care team visited him at home, took a detailed history and did a thorough physical examination. The ulcer was cleaned and dressed. Morphine tablets were administered to relieve him of the pain. Other supporting medicines were provided and his wife was trained to dress the wound daily and keep it free from infection. We counseled the patient and his relatives as they were going through terrible stress, fear and depression.

Ramchand was relieved of his pain and was therefore able to sleep better. He was also relieved of cough and other symptoms. We were able to uplift him and his family to a better frame of mind through counseling. He was in our care for over 2 months.
