Success Story

Dalit artists, time and again, face discrimination at one level or the other.

Dalit artists, time and again, face discrimination at one level or the other. Not only are they denied a platform to showcase their art forms, but even when given an opportunity are sidelined by “popular art forms”. The training of dalit women in Godna art in Madhubani district was quite a challenging task. Dalit women work at home and from time to time also work as agricultural labourers. Majority of them are not educated or financially independent. Daily harassment at home and outside has become a part of their lives. The training and the stipend have made them confident and financially independent.

Initially, Dalit Foundation identified 5 Dalit women from Madhubani for a month long training programme in Ahmedabad. Shanti Devi (Photograph below) has faced a lot of hardships through out her life. She, along with four other women, traveled to Ahmedabad attended the month long training programme under the guidance of their trainer. The paintings made by all the women during their one month training were put on exhibition by Dalit Foundation in New Delhi.
The training, fellowship and stipend provided to the dalit women artist and trainees has helped them achieve not only some level of financial independence but also with a lot of confidence and self-belief. The women are not just dependant on agricultural labour anymore. Godna art is coming up as an alternative source of livelihood for the women. The programme has also made the women confident and self-reliant.
